Penpalling: why it’s such a great hobby!

In my first article I’ll write about my favourite hobby: Penpalling!

Many people when I tell them I have penpals ask me “but are you still writing by post? Isn’t is cheaper and faster to use email?”

Well, the answer to both questions is: YES! Yes, I’m still writing by post, and YES, definitely it’s cheaper and faster to use email! So why me and so many others all over the world are still writing by mail?? I guess the answer could be different for everyone, like some would say they love to get something other than bills in the mail, or they don’t want to spend all their time in front of the computer, or they find email impersonal, or they like to swap something…for me I guess it’s a combination of all these things and more.

I started writing to my first penpal when I was about 11 or so, and I soon realized I loved the thrill of waiting for the postman and see if that day he would bring a letter from my friend…after a while it became addictive so then I started looking for other penpals. Back then you used to put your advertisement in a magazine and people would write to you…nowadays we are all so worried about giving our address away, we were not worrying about that back then, but if you think about it, anyone could have bought those magazines, just like everyone can be on the Internet today. When Internet and email came out I lost many penpals as many of them decided to write by email to save money or because it was faster, or just because it was a new thing. You know, in the beginning we would get 5 letters but when 1 email came we were excited because it was something new for us…now we get 100 emails and when a letter comes we get all excited!! For me after all these years, it’s still a thrill when the postman comes and brings me letters!

Some would say I’m a bad penpal because I type my letters…I admit it’s much faster and if I should write by hand, my hand would start hurting after the fist letter, so OK, I type the letters. This doesn’t mean I don’t put an effort in writing them or that I don’t care about my penpals, it’s just a way to write back faster to everyone. For me it’s not important if my pals handwrite or type, the only thing that matters to me is that they’ll write! Plus, when some penpals have a real bad handwriting, it’s a relief to get a typed letter so you can finally read everything!! Since I don’t really care about email, I tend to forget what was written in the email right after I replied to it, but the letters I remember. I still love to have the real letter in my hands, and I love to swap items, like for example postcards, or stickers, tea bags, articles on my favourite singers….can you get that with an email?? No way!

A penpal can become a real friend, sometimes you feel like you can write your penpal things you wouldn’t say to your real-life friends, you can open your heart to them in a different way, that’s what I found. When my ex husband left me my penpals have been very supportive and it helped me a lot to be able to write my feelings down to them. During the years I met many of my penpals and they always were as lovely as in the letters, and we always had a great time together. And when we would travel somewhere it was nice to say “Oh, I have a penpal there, maybe I can meet her”.

And penpalling was a great way to learn English for me. When people asks how did I learn to speak English so well I always tell them that after school all I did was translating songs and writing to penpals…that makes you learn the real language, not the perfect polished version you learn at school, but the way the real people talk. If someone had a kid who is studying English I would definitely recommend them to find a penpal for their kid as that’s for me the best way to learn.

La Corrispondenza: perchè è un bellissimo hobby!

Il mio primo post parlerà del mio hobby preferito: la Corrispondenza!

Tante persone quando dico di avere delle amiche di penna mi chiedono “ma scrivi ancora via posta? Non è meno costoso e più veloce usare le email?”. Ovviamente la risposta a entrambe le domande è SI’! Sì, scrivo ancora via posta, e sì, certo sarebbe meno costoso e più veloce scrivere via email! Allora perchè io e così tante altre persone in tutto il mondo scriviamo ancora lettere? Immagino che la risposta sarebbe differente per ognuno, alcuni direbbero che è bello ricevere qualcos’altro nella buca delle lettere oltre alle bollette, o che non vogliono passare tutto il tempo davanti al computer, o che le email sono impersonali, o che gli piace scambiare qualcosa…per me direi che è una combinazione di tutte queste cose e altre.

Ho iniziato a scrivere alla mia prima amica di penna quando avevo circa 11 anni, e presto ho capito che adoravo aspettare il postino ogni giorno per vedere se quel giorno mi avrebbe portato una lettera della mia amica…dopo un pò non potevo più farne a meno, così ho iniziato a cercare altre amiche di penna. Allora si metteva un’annuncio su un giornalino e qualcuno ti scriveva…adesso tutti sono così’ preoccupati di dare l’indirizzo a qualcuno, ma se ci pensate, chiunque poteva comprare quei giornali, come chiunque adesso può essere su Internet! Con l’arrivo di  Internet e delle email ho perso parecchie corrispondenti, alcune hanno deciso di scrivere solo email perchè costava meno o era più veloce, o solo perchè era una cosa nuova. All’inizio ricevevi 5 lettere e appena arrivava una mail eri tutto eccitato perchè era una novità…oggi riceviamo 100 email e siamo tutti eccitati quando arriva una lettera!! Per me dopo tutti questi anni è ancora una festa quando arriva il postino a portarmi le lettere!

Alcuni poi magari diranno che non sono una brava corrispondente perchè scrivo le lettere con il computer (alcuni smettono di scriverti se non scrivi a mano!!)…ammetto che è più veloce e che se dovessi scrivere a mano avrei i crampi dopo la prima lettera! Per me non importa se uno mi scrive a mano o stampa la lettera, basta che mi scriva! Poi diciamo la verità, certe persone hanno una calligrafia così terribile che è un sollievo se decidono di stampare le lettere!! Dato che sinceramente non mi importa niente delle email, tendo a dimenticarmi cosa c’era scritto in una mail appena ho finito di rispondere, con le lettere mi ricordo tutto. Mi piace ancora tanto avere la lettera in mano e mi piace scambiare cose, come cartoline, adesivi, bustine di The, articoli sui miei cantanti preferiti…puoi fare questo via email?? Certo che no!

Un’amica di penna può diventare una vera amica, a volte scrivi loro cose che non diresti ai tuoi amici, riesci ad aprire il tuo cuore in modo diverso, almeno per me è così. Quando il mio ex marito mi ha mollata le mie amiche di penna sono state meravigliose, mi hanno supportata tanto e mi ha aiutata tanto poter scrivere quello che provavo. Negli anni ho incontrato tante delle mie amiche di penna, si sono sempre dimostrate carine come nelle lettere e abbiamo passato dei bellissimi momenti insieme! E quando progettavamo un viaggio da qualche parte era bello poter dire “Oh, io ho un’amica lì, magari la posso incontrare”.

Oltre a questo la corrispondenza è stata un modo perfetto per imparare bene l’Inglese per me. Quando mi chiedono come ho imparato l’Inglese così bene dico sempre che dopo la scuola ho continuato a tradurre canzoni e a scrivere alle mie amiche in Inglese… questo ti fa imparare il vero Inglese, non la versione perfettina della scuola, ma quello che parla la gente. Se qualcuno ha un figlio che studia Inglese gli raccomanderei decisamente di trovargli un’amico di penna, perchè per me quello è il modo migliore di impararlo.

Ragazzi, questo post è diventato lunghissimo… e ci sono ancora tante cose da scrivere, ma le terrò da parte per un’altro post! E voi, avete amiche di penna, o le avete avute?? Mi piacerebbe leggere le vostre esperienze! Viva la Corrispondenza!!
